Andrew Jackson was the United States’ seventh president. He led the country from 1829

to 1837. Jackson was born in Waxhaw on 15th March, 1767 and died on 8th June, 1845. Initially,

he was a landowner, lawyer, judge and merchant. He was orphaned by the age of 14 years but he

overcame all odds to become the first president from the western region. In addition to being a

politician, Jackson was also an army general. He became famous in 1812 when he overpowered

the British in the Battle of New Orleans. He was a great supporter of individual liberty and was

known for challenging the Federal system. Jackson’s presidency greatly impacted the successive

political regimes and his influence is felt even in today’s political system in the United States.

Jackson’s political journey began in 1796 when he was elected as the first representative

for Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives. He had taken part in the development of the

Tennessee Constitution earlier that year. Jackson was elected in 1797 to the Senate where he

served for eight months before resigning. In 1801, he became the Tennessee militia commander.

His military success in 1812 during the Battle of the Horseshoe Bend where he defeated the

Creek Indians earned him the position of major general. He was later declared a national hero in

1815 after defeating the British in the battle of New Orleans.
