AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN TODAY: THE ASSIMILATION POLICY OF 1961 AND ITS IMPACT ON HEALTH STATUS

Australian Indigenous men, women, and children have – since the time of the invasion – experienced some significant disparities in health access and other social determinants of health such as a good education, job opportunities, house income, environmental sanitation and clean drinking water (Baum & Friel 2017). To address this, deliberate measures have had to be put in place by successive governments to try and address the existing health equality gaps experienced by Indigenous Australians. One of the most famous of these measures is the Close the Gap initiative (Australian Government 2020).

According to MacRae et al. (2013), the current health status of Australian Indigenous peoples is poorer than the rest of the Australians. This is because of their continued disadvantaged position in terms of the social determinants of health such as education, employment, income, racism, land, and incarceration. The Indigenous population of Australians experience disadvantage in all of these areas (MacRae et al. 2013).

Woking with Australian Indigenous Peoples to Help Close the Gap

As a healthcare professional, I am aware that in order to gain the confidence, trust, and respect of the Australian Indigenous peoples; one has to be both culturally sensitive and culturally competent. This is a prerequisite for successful collaboration with this population of Australians in attempts to close the gap of health inequality. To enable me work with this population demographic to close the gap, there are many strategies that are culturally sensitive that I may use.
