Aristotle’s Ideas on Civic Relationships

Happiness:

In his ethical writings, Aristotle explicitly considered the place of civic relationships

within well-ordered human societies and even sought to differentiate them from other types of

relationships. For instance, drawing on his thoughts, civic relationships characterizes the way

individuals concern themselves with each other within the public sphere. According to Aristotle,

this kind of relationships must be civic in order to be a meaningful type of relationships and

derive happiness from them. Their civic character means that they must relate to how individuals

relate as citizens. It is not the same as citizenship, but it should shed light regarding how persons

relate in the civic realm. For instance, civic friendship component in the Aristotelian model of

companionship means that civic friendship must constitute enough features of friendship. It

should be founded on the virtues of mutual love, goodwill, tendency to seek other people’s

company, mutual trust and assistance when required, joint efforts, happiness, and shared history.

Aristotelian civic friendship indicates that such general features of friendship must project into

The Aristotelian form of friendship protracts a direct link between the individual and the

Aristotle advocated virtuous civic relationships as the most appropriate model. He argued that

the function of virtue is the very core of human happiness.
