Select two (2) (Jainism and Buddhism) religions from those that we have studied

so far. Identify the origin of each religion, and discuss at least three (3) of its

foundational spiritual beliefs. 

Explain how these beliefs that you have identified for each of the two (2) religions

are both similar and different.

Explain the spiritual practices of each religion.

Explain how each religion is practiced today. Provide one (1) specific example of

how each is practiced.

Identify at least two (2) ways in which each religion is practiced in the world.

Provide a specific example of each way you identified to support the response.

Comparison of Jainism and Buddhism

Jainism refers to a religion that originated in India and which teaches that nonviolence is

the best way to attain liberation. It was founded by Mahavira (Long, 2011). Buddhism also

started in India and is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, commonly referred to as

Buddha (Harvey, 2012). The founders of both religions came from royal families. Even though

the two religions originated from India, Jainism has largely been confined to India while

Buddhism has spread to other countries in Asia, Europe and North America.

One of the fundamental spiritual beliefs of Buddhism is the four noble truths. These

include suffering (Dukkha), its cause (Samudaya), the realization that suffering can be stopped

(Nirodha) and ending the suffering (Magga) (Harvey, 2012).
