Critical success factors for e-learning in developing countries
Critical success factors for e-learning in developing countries
This paper critically reviews the study by Bhuasiri et al. (2012) on critical success factors
in developing countries’ e-learning implementation. The study is appropriate but the results do
not give a comprehensive picture of the situation in all the developing countries and also the
participants were drawn from only two stakeholder groups. The objective of this research was to
identify the critical success factors of the adoption of e-learning systems in developing countries
and to prioritize them according to their importance. The motivation of this research was to
identify the factors that contribute to the success of systems of e-learning in developing
countries. Conducting a study on e-learning implementation in developing countries was
motivated by the fact that previous studies have focused only on developed countries. Therefore,
there was a need to get the viewpoints of participants from developing countries.
The authors have explored several studies previously done on e-learning. These studies
suggest that individual characteristics as well as the environmental and social factors are
important for the implementation of e-learning. The literature provides various perspectives to
evaluate the implementation of e-learning, which include the social cognitive theory, technology
acceptance model, motivation theory and Information System success model. Bhuasiri et al.
agree with the perspectives of the authors of previous studies and build on them to conduct their
research. The author’s base their research on the Information System success model, social
cognitive theory and motivation theory to come up with seven success factors of e-learning.
These factors are classified into personal, environmental and system dimensions. The success
factors include the learners’ characteristics, e-learning environment, instructor’s characteristics,
institution and service quality, course and information quality, infrastructure and system quality
and motivation. The key variables defined by the authors in this research are the critical success
factors and e-learning. The critical success factors are the independent variables while e-learning
is the dependent variable.
