presentation over the History and major events in bilingual education. Include

pertinent information that bilingual educators should be aware of in this area of

education. Choose an era of the history of bilingual education or give a brief

overview of the complete history as outlined in the textbook. You will need to

access additional resources for this assignment besides the textbook and cite your

Bilingual education is one of the most debated topics in the United States. The U.S. is a

culturally diverse country and there is an increase in non-English speaking minority groups.

Bilingual education in the U.S. has gone through many changes due to the shifting social,

political and economic factors. The development of bilingual education in the U.S. can be

divided into four major periods. Each of these periods was characterized by different social,

political and economic changes. There were also different attitudes towards bilingual education

in each of these eras. In the permissive period which lasted between the 1700s and the 1880s,

there was a general acceptance of bilingual education. However, there was a lot of opposition for

bilingual education during the restrictive period which lasted between the 1880s and 1960s. The

attitude towards bilingual education changed again in the opportunist period between the 1960s

and 1980s where increased support for these programs was evident. During the dismissive period

starting from the 1980s, bilingual education was discouraged in many states.

The permissive period was characterized by increased immigration of foreigners into the

U.S. Several bilingual education laws were passed and a number of bilingual schools were

started during this period (Ovando 4).
