Overall assignment: Be sure that your answer incorporates specific examples from the

text, the lectures and the web sites referred to in the lectures. Also, make sure your

answer begins with a clear thesis and develops a consistent interpretation throughout

based on this thesis. Please remember that I need to see your interpretation backed up

by as many specific examples (names, dates and places) drawn from the course

materials as possible. I must see multiple examples drawn from lecture and the text and

at least one from the web sites referred to in the lectures. Most students need between

three and five pages to develop a complete answer to the prompt.

Using the course sources, develop the history of Judaism and that of Hinduism

and then compare and contrast both religions histories and their beliefs. Please

note that I must see the historical development and not just the core beliefs of

both religions.

How do I grade this assignment? This is the first of your three unit paper

assignments in this course and it is worth 20% of your course grade. As the primary

goal of the unit papers is to get your thoughts on a specific subject, grammar and

spelling are less important in a unit paper than in the formal research paper (about 10%

of the assignment grade for unit papers, compared to 20% for formal papers). That

said, I will still deduct points for excessive grammar and spelling mistakes. Excessive is

defined as either mistakes that a word processing program’s tools would have caught or

ones that impede my understanding of your thoughts. 45% of your grade is based on

using all relevant course sources to construct a well-supported argument that links

broad ideas with specific examples. 45% of your grade is constructing a strong

argument that flows from a clear thesis developed by you in response to the prompt.
