Introduction
Approximately 11.6 million plastic surgeries were conducted in the U.S. in 2006 (Brown, Furnham, Glanville, & Swami, 2007). Plastic surgery has been growing in popularity globally, and people undergo the procedure for varied reasons. Some people are not comfortable with their physical appearance and opt to undergo plastic surgery in order to attain the ideal beauty. Others undergo the procedure due to health reasons. Moreover, others go through the procedure to restore their physical features following disfigurements from events such as vehicle accidents or burns. Some of the most common plastic surgery procedures include liposuction, face lifts, breast enlargement or reduction, reconstructive surgery, lip enhancement, and nose surgery. There are differing views regarding the issue of plastic surgery as the procedure has advantages and shortcomings. Some people feel that the procedure is not beneficial and people should avoid undergoing it. However, others believe that it has numerous benefits and should, therefore, be embraced. This essay supports plastic surgery because it is beneficial in boosting self-esteem, repairing body disfigurements, and reducing health problems associated with body features.
Self-Esteem, Disfigurements, and Health Problems Proponents of plastic surgery argue that it is beneficial because it improves the self-esteem of those who undergo the procedure. The society has set certain standards of beauty and people who do not fit within those standards suffer from depression because they believe that they do not look good.
