Antibiotics are used for prevention and for treatment of diseases that are infection like ear pain and throat pain in both children and adults. Ear and throat infections are very common in children. Ear infections in children cause pain and even fever sometimes making the child very uncomfortable (Kourtis, 2011). They are treated using antibiotic therapy and are actually one of the reasons why children are given antibiotics (Kourtis, 2011). For example, antibiotic therapy is the standard treatment for middle ear infections that are acute. Throat pain is also treated with antibiotics unless it is a viral infection since it will not help the pain caused by viral infection. A good example, strep throat caused by Streptococcus is usually treated with penicillin or amoxicillin and the child should stay at home for around twenty four hours to forty eight hours after beginning the treatment (Kourtis, 2011). The cause should however be confirmed so as to ensure that the antibiotic therapy is not provided for viral infection. In adults, ear infection can be caused by a virus or bacteria and in the case of a virus causing the infection, antibiotic therapy will not be of any help (Bope and Kellerman, 2012).  They only apply on bacterial ear infections. For example, there are antibiotic ear drops for external ear infection like afloxacin and ciprofloxacin, while for middle ear infections there are amoxicillin, azithromycin and cefuroxime among others
