A. Imagine that you lived through and/or participated in the Second Crusade. Years
later, you reflect on the decisions made at the Council of Acre and the
significance of the crusade itself. You decide to preserve memories of your
experience by writing a letter to your unborn child so that, in the event of your
death, he/she will understand the momentous times you have lived through. You
particularly want to explain “the big picture” and address questions such as:
What factors led to the defeat of the crusading forces? To what extent did God
determine victory or defeat? What might you have done differently (given your
role)? How have the crusades affected relations between East and West? Do you
believe that the crusades should continue? Why or why not? How has life in
Europe changed as a result of the crusades?
B. Imagine that you are a parliamentarian who served in the Reformation
Parliament, 1529-36. King Henry VIII has just died, giving you a moment to
reflect on the events of the previous two decades. You decide to preserve
memories of your experience in parliament by writing a letter to your unborn
child so that, in the event of your death, he/she will understand the momentous
times you have lived through. You particularly want to explain “the big picture”
and address questions such as: How would you weigh the relative importance of
(a) Lutheran reformers, (b) anticlericalism, and (c) the king’s need for a divorce,
in the decision to break with the Roman Catholic Church? Are you satisfied with
the results of the Reformation (the dissolution of the monasteries, etc)? Do you
think that England has gained strength and authority vis-à-vis its European rivals?
Or has this set the stage for a century of war?
