Globalization has impacted the private security industry in that it has led to an increase in

the number, scope, and size of private security companies. The growth in these companies has

led to significant security landscape changes, both at the local and global levels (Browning &

Cornish, 2005). The challenges linked with globalization have contributed to the increased

demand and supply of private security. The increased connectedness of people, including their

ease of communication and movement to and from distant places, has brought about new challenges such as terrorism (Kirshner, 2013). Thus, the need for private security has increased

as a solution to these problems. Private security firms function in a global market. For instance,

the US hires American as well as foreign private security corporations. Thus, the private security

sector is globalized. The global private security market value is approximately $139 billion and

is expected to keep growing (Abrahamsen & Williams, 2010). In the UK, employment in the

private security industry rose from 66,950 to 161,013 between 1951 and 2001. There is more

private security personnel than the public police in the UK by approximately two to one.
