PSY 388 _ Does hearing voices always indicate a diagnosis of psychosis?

  1. Select the
    topic
Topics are provided below. Note that this is a preliminary list of topics for those
who want to get started straight away. There may be some additional topics
added by the end of Week 2 as I am consulting with stakeholders.
  2. Do some
    general
    reading
You should commence your reading about the topic with the appropriate sections
of your text and perhaps books or other resources available in the library. It is also
worth starting a general search in the databases
  3. Developing a
    search
    strategy
Once you have an idea about the topic you can start developing a search strategy.
    This includes
 Clarify your question – note, as this is an undergraduate unit, you will not be
expected to use any particular format (eg no need to use PICO etc)
 Identifying relevant search terms. For example, if your question was: Is social
phobia/social anxiety disorder is just an extreme form of shyness? Your search
terms might be “Social Anxiety” or “Social Phobia” and “Shyness” and
“continuum”. You may need to play around with this.
 Visit http://libguides.murdoch.edu.au/systematic/developing for some more
    ideas on using search terms
 The idea is to introduce you to this process at this level, so we don’t expect
    perfection at this stage!
  4. Searching the
    databases
    systematically
 Once you have fleshed out your search
strategy, then the idea is to apply this to a
    range of databases
 For this review we expect you to use the
same systematic process with at least the
    following databases (see Database List)
    o PsycINFO (includes PsycArticles)
    o Scopus
    o Web of Science
    o PubMed
You can of course choose to use more, but we want to make sure you don’t have
to end up reading 1000 articles!
 Keep good records of the search strategy you are using (eg search terms, how
many articles you find), so that you can replicate if in future. See
    http://libguides.murdoch.edu.au/systematic/documenting for an example
 Become familiar with the features of the database (eg storing records of
searches etc to make your job easier)
  5. Identify
    relevant
    studies
 You should go through the references and identify relevant articles. Some
might be background reading (eg opinion pieces, literature reviews) but when
looking for the evidence you also want to include
 Recently published empirical (ie they collect data) journal articles which you
must access in full text, not as abstracts.
 DO NOT just select studies that support your view, the range of studies
identified become the “pool” of evidence that needs to be reviewed
 If there are a lot, you can limit the search parameters to be more specific eg
o only in the past 5 years; only in a particular population (eg adults not
children); only in particular conditions (eg depression not psychosis)
 Think about what community resources are not yet available, and perhaps gear
    your search towards that!

    Community Information Resource: Steps (continued)
  6. Review the
    studies
The pool of studies you have identified as relevant should be read and reviewed,
so that you are reviewing as much of the evidence available in relation to your
topic. Some questions to ask yourself in preparing the review include
o What are the main themes identified in the literature? Are there any trends?
o Are the results consistent, or are they mixed?
o What are the gaps? What other research do we still need to do?
o Others might have already reviewed the evidence and produced a review – in
this assignment, you can refer to these as well.
o The idea is to review the literature in a balanced way, supported by evidence to
answer the question (and indicate how well we can answer it!).
