REFLECTION ON WHAT GOES ON IN THE HEAD OF A SCHIZOPHRENIA PATIENT USING JOHN’S MODEL OF REFLECTION
REFLECTION ON WHAT GOES ON IN THE HEAD OF A SCHIZOPHRENIA PATIENT USING JOHN’S MODEL OF REFLECTION
Description
The goal of this task is for you to reflect on and appraise a learning experience that you have been involved in during this course, Using a reflective model of your choice, critically reflect on how this experience has impacted on your learning in relation to the care of someone with mental illness and consider how this has had implications for your future learning and clinical practice.
(A) What can I base my reflection on?
- Any multi-media video used throughout this course here on Blackboard (a YouTube clip, a TED talk, a documentary). If you choose a multi-media source, you may reflect on a specific part of the video, or the video (make this clear to your marker). This source does not need to be referenced.

(B) How do I complete this reflection?
- Choose your model of reflection. We suggest either Gibb’s model of reflection: https://www.ed.ac.uk/reflection/reflectors-toolkit/reflecting-on-experience/gibbs-reflective-cycle OR John’s Model of Reflection: A model for structured reflection.doc
- You will need to use academic sources to support both your observations of the event and any future changes in practice that you may be considering
- This is an individual task – It requires a standard essay format; the word count is 2000 words. This does not include in-text citations or a reference list. There is a +/- 10% allowance to the word count and there will be academic penalty if you exceed the word count
(C) What reference style do I use? students must adhere to the Harvard style of referencing.
Mental health refers to the characteristic state of mind that empowers an individual to explore their capabilities, manage the normal life stressors, and engage in productive activities that result in positive contributions to their society (Galderisi, Heinz, Kastrup, Beezhold & Sartorius 2015, p.231). Galderisi et al. (2015), states that mental health is a key determinant of the collective and individual capacity to reason, experience emotions, create and maintain interpersonal relationships, and engage in income-generating activities (p.231). Therefore, the promotion and protection of mental health is a vital concern, while the support and restoration of the mentally ill is a fundamental human right.
Reflection Throughout the video, my objective was to understand what goes on in the mind of a schizophrenia patient. Being an educational video, I watched it keenly, borne of the high optimism to become enlightened and to uncover the mystery shrouding schizophrenia. By the end, I had constructed a clearer perspective of the disease, informed by the patient’s narration, and the doctor’s input on the neuroimaging findings.
