As you should know, if you’ve been following, even casually, the aftermath of Trump’s election victory in 2016, President Trump has repeatedly and continuously employed the term “witch hunt” to refer to efforts by others, primarily by elected Democrats in Congress, to investigate whether there was collusion between Russian (and other, international) operatives and the Trump campaign.

Why would he use such a term, unless he (or his advisors) thought that it would resonate with the American people, i.e. that they would all, or most of them anyway, know exactly what he meant by this (very) colorful figure of speech? And for balance, let it be known that many on the Democratic side have characterized in the same way the Republican effort to blame then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the killing of four United States consular officials by insurrectionaries in civil war-torn Benghazi, a major city in Libya, during the Obama administration.

What is it about witch hunting that is so quintessentially American? Unless it is not so, but characteristic of other societies as well?
