Social Justice: What it is and How I Would Promote it in the Future at My Current Career Position as a Psychologist

The notion of social justice stems from the idea of fairness in every aspect of human endeavor. It is the consideration of every human being as having the same rights and privileges, regardless of their status in society. Social justice advocates for the placing of every person on the same pedestal, without regard to their race, socio-economic status, religion, creed, color, sexual orientation, culture, beliefs, or political persuasion. It advocates for the treatment of every person equally without discrimination in terms of resource allocation and sharing, opportunities for advancement, and access to vital necessities of life including amenities like sanitation and healthcare.             In a world full of social and economic disparities, social justice has become a rallying call to reduce the suffering of particular demographics of the world’s population.

The Social Justice Framework             As has been illustrated by numerous social justice advocates, the concept of social justice simply means you should treat others the way you would like to be treated. Having a class structure in society where you have the rich and the poor, the educated and the illiterate, the Black and the White and so on does not foster social justice at all. As Ornstein (2017) observes, “The emphasis on vertical social mobility in the American social structure is one of the most striking features of our class system…” (p. 541). He goes on to opine that this is what underpins the notion of the “American dream” that many use to define success. It is therefore a rat race in which only the fittest survive.

Research into the Psychology of Discrimination             As a psychology scholar, I will be able to devote my time to research into the psychology behind the behavioral characteristics underpinning race relations and prejudice, poverty and disease, gender-based violence, and sexual abuse amongst others (Rosenthal, 2016).
