In the narrative by Steadman about his expeditions in Surinam’s five year revolution era by the Negros, a lot is depicted through the manner in which the Europeans were running the American colony. The authoritarian rule that was enforced on the native subjects and the ‘slavery Negroes’ by the colonizers got done with a ‘heavy fist’ that was oppressive to their already ‘wretched livelihoods’ (Stedman, 247). While some of the colonialist rulers were mistreating the very subjects under their rule, some of the colonial masters were more than kind to create meaningful and purposeful relationships with the very natives and ‘Negroes.’ Some were helping the very colonial subjects learn the means of production and increase skills on a myriad of trade and social development abilities. The motives of the colonizers were at most inclined towards establishment of an exploitative system on their territory while alienating the inhabitants to ‘mediocre livelihood.’ The lives of the natives that were initially a traditional set-up governed by cultural ‘headmen’, were changed to submission to the European kinsmen that came with an overhaul of the systems of authority and social lives.
