The efficacy of Zoledronic acid on the treatment of Postmenopausal osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterised by low bone mass and
deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and
susceptibility to fracture. Studies have shown that women after menopause are
at higher risk of developing osteoporosis but this condition may also affect men,
younger women and children. One in two women and one in five men over the
age of 50 will develop a bone fracture. Osteoporosis costs the NHS over 1.5
billion annually and has a large burden on the NHS in terms of costs and
healthcare.
The diagnosis of postmenopausal osteoporosis can be confirmed through the
history of the patient, bone mineral density and to a lesser extent parathyroid-
related causes. Broken wrists, hips and spinal bones are the most common
fractures in osteoporosis.
METHODS
“Searching”
All papers relating to the efficacy of Zoledronic acid on the treatment of
postmenopausal osteoporosis were attached to my dairy. The search engines
that were adopted in this search use reliable journal sources such as “Nature”
and “Science”.
The first search engine that was used for this purpose is the MMU electronic
database. I replicated the same search strategy with MEDLINE database. I chose
MEDLINE because it is more clinically orientated and has more biomedically-
related data. After comparing the results, the relevant identical articles from the
two searches were combined whereas new ones were added to the list of
relevant articles. Moreover, all articles from both sources are from March 2007
until 2010.
Eligibility Criteria
All of the academic papers that were found are not exactly inclusive to my
question’s answer. For example, some of them have mentioned about
bisphosphonates other than Zoledronate such as oral and intravenous agents or
other therapies utilised in osteoporosis in males and females. Although, the
articles did not focus uniquely on my topic but they have been eligible for
incorporation. For instance, they have demonstrated vitamin D and four types of
bisphosphonate; alendronate, risedronate, ibandronate and zoledronate that
involve different methods of treatment of osteoporosis. Also, the papers have
indicated current and common clinical trials for treatment.
