The Use of Cell Phones While Driving Should be prohibited
Today, it is not unusual to see people using their cell phones while driving. They could
either be speaking on the phone, texting or reading messages and emails. Many people die on our
roads everyday because of drivers getting distracted while driving. According to the National
Safety Council, approximately 1.6 million accidents are caused every year by the use of cell
phones while driving. The use of cell phones while driving is one of the causes of distraction.
Driving is an activity that requires total concentration from the driver in order to arrive to avoid
causing accidents. Several states in the United States have passed legislation prohibiting the use
of cell phones while driving while others have not (American Psychological Association, 2006).
In order to reduce the number of accidents on our roads, the use of cell phones while driving
should be banned.
One of the reasons why using cell phones while driving should be banned is that they
distract the driver and can lead to accidents. Though other activities such as eating, listening to
music or talking to other people in the vehicle can distract the driver, they are not as risky as a
cell phone. Talking on the cell phone takes the driver’s attention from the road. The more
absorbing the conversation, the more distracted the driver gets, and this increases the chances of
causing an accident. Texting is even more dangerous as the drivers will have to take their eyes
off the road (American Psychological Association, 2006).
Using a cell phone while driving not only endangers the driver’s life but also those of
other road users. There are other drivers and passengers in other vehicles as well as pedestrians
on the road. Therefore, drivers should be responsible and avoid getting distracted in order to
ensure the safety of other road users (American Psychological Association, 2006).
