(include beliefs in the group) what drove them to terrorism
2. Explain the strategies and tactics from the group
Numerous terrorist organizations in the world threaten the security, people, and
infrastructure of different nations. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) refers to a
terrorist group established in January 2009 after the amalgamation of the Yemeni and Saudi Al
Qaeda branches. AQAP is a terrorist organization that employs tactics such as suicide bombings,
lone attacks, and propaganda to attack its enemies to eliminate western influence in Muslim
countries and form a jihadist emirate in Yemen.
The group members’ history can be traced to the 1990s when they returned to Yemen
from Afghanistan, where they had been fighting with the Soviets (Chakravortty, 2018). After the
Soviet Union’s collapse, the militants were not allowed to return to their countries such as Iraq
and Saudi Arabia. Instead, they were sent to Yemen, where they were welcomed by Ali Abdullah
Saleh, the Yemeni president, and sent to fight against South Yemen’s Marxist government. The
militants defeated the southern secessionists, leading to the unification of Southern and Northern
Yemen (Chakravortty, 2018). They then settled in South Yemen, where they began creating
terror outfits led by Osama Bin Laden, who was also living in Yemen.
Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Saleh cooperated with the US to fight
terrorism, which led to antagonism between the Yemeni government and the militants. In 2006,
23 jihadists escaped from prison in Yemen, and the Al-Qaeda in Yemen (AQY) launched
numerous attacks on the US embassy, tourists, and oil facilities (Page et al., 2011). In 2006, they
attempted an unsuccessful suicide bombing of Hadramaut and Marib oil facilities. They also
carried out a suicide bombing in 2007 that led to the death of seven Spanish tourists. In 2008,
they attacked the US embassy at Sanaa (Knoll, 2017).
