Throughout the history of mankind people have at all times died and the living have at all

times mourned death of their loved ones using some sort of ceremony. Typical funeral, burial,

bereavement customs in contemporary U.S is a relatively recent tradition. In the past, funeral that

were practiced were quite plain constituting of a pine casket with family members and close

friends caring for the corpse, and a simple burial was conducted. This is dramatically different

from the contemporary funerals that are conducted by professionals who transform dead bodies

into living memorials (Hunter, 2007).

Today, the standard funeral customs is a coping means and a reasonably good practice.

However, there are various useful methods of disposing the dead and mourning the death of a

loved one. Across different cultures living in the U.S, the dead are disposed by burning, burying

in the earth or in the sea, exposing to air and preservation. In the U.S, most dead bodies are

disposed via burying in the earth (Hunter, 2007). However, over the last few years, cremation

has emerged as an attractive alternative that has gained tremendous acceptance across different

cultures living in the United States. Traditionally, the Native Americans practiced cremation of

the dead.
