of both women and girls?

The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) have targets aimed at the empowerment of girls and women. The aim of the third MDG is to promote gender equality and ensure women empowerment. Its target is to end gender disparity in secondary and primary education (United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), (2015).

The purpose of the fifth SDG is to attain gender equality and empower all girls and women. Some of the targets of this SDG include eliminating all forms of discrimination, harmful practices, and violence against girls and women. Other targets include to recognizing unpaid care and domestic work, ensuring participation of women in leadership, and ensuring access to reproductive rights, and sexual and reproductive health (UNDP, 2017).

                Although several strides have been made towards the achievement of these goals, it is necessary to continue empowering girls and women because they continue to suffer oppressive abuses such as child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) in some parts of the world. For example, as a result of early marriage and FGM, Sasha from Samburu Kenya had complications during birth, leading to vaginal fistula (Gatwiri & McLaren, 2017). Women also need to be empowered to overcome victimization due to colonial history, cultural traditions, and patriarchy. Conditions such as being a woman in a post-colonial and patriarchal society in extreme poverty increase the likelihood of women suffering from discrimination, abuse, and harm. They also need to be empowered through education to increase awareness about the causes of conditions such as fistula instead of believing that it is God’s punishment for wrongdoings. With such awareness, women from marginalized regions will be empowered to fight against the root causes of fistula (Gatwiri & McLaren, 2017).
