Psychological disorders are some of the commonest problems in today’s society, each with different symptoms, prognosis and treatment interventions. This paper explores the similarities and differences between Alzheimer’s disease and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Moreover, the strengths, weaknesses and application of various evidence-based counseling interventions are discussed. The paper also discusses the various contributions that counselors can make in the support and treatment of people with psychological disorders. The strengths and limitations of counseling training programs are also explored.
Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common forms of dementia. It mostly affects people aged above 65 years (Lillrank & Collins, 2007). This disease affects the brain and causes the progressive degeneration of cells. The patients experience a decline in their memory and thinking ability. In addition, their emotions and behavior are affected and finally, the patient dies (Lu & Bludau, 2011).Alzheimer’s disease affects the victims in three stages namely the early, moderate and severe stages.
Patients in the early stage forget recent events and conversations. They may also experience language, coordination and driving difficulties. They also develop mood swings and depression (Lu & Bludau, 2011). In the moderate stage, people experience increased memory loss. They may forget details about themselves and fail to recognize familiar people. Their speech is affected and their reasoning becomes irrational (Lillrank & Collins, 2007). Their behavior and mood also change. They become confused about time and can get lost in places that they are very familiar with (Lu & Bludau, 2011). They also become delusional and aggressive. People in this stage cannot go on with their normal lives and need to be assisted. During the severe stage of Alzheimer’s disease, the patient cannot differentiate between the present and the past. The patient also loses the ability to communicate or understand information. People in this stage do not have the ability to take care of themselves and need to be monitored throughout (Lu & Bludau, 2011). They are unable to move and may also become delirious. Moreover, their behavior and mood worsen (Lillrank & Collins, 2007).
